About Our Department

Radiotherapy Physics is one of the largest sections of the directorate of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering, with a staffing complement of 24.7 WTE, comprising Consultant Clinical Scientists, Medical Physics Experts, Clinical Scientists, Clinical Technologists, Radiotherapy Engineers, IT specialists and a Mechanical Engineer.

We work closely in collaboration with the Oncology department to provide the Radiotherapy service for the South West Wales Cancer Centre (SWWCC) based at Singleton Hospital. Our service covers the whole of South West Wales, from Bridgend to Pembroke, up to Aberystwyth, treating around 3000 patients per year.

Our Mission

We are responsible for the safety of all patients, introducing new technologies to improve the quality of treatments and thereby improving the quality of life of patients. Every patient having Radiotherapy has a personalised bespoke treatment plan calculated to sub-millimetre accuracy generated by Radiotherapy physics.

This can take hours of computer time as millions of solutions are tested to find the safest, most efficient and most appropriate solution for each patient. The last 10 years has seen a massive increase in the numbers of patients (50%) as well as the complexity of Radiotherapy treatments.

Technological Advancement

Ten years ago a patient had a treatment plan comprising 3 radiation fields that took 15 minutes to deliver. Today, this is typically 70 radiation fields and is delivered in less than 90 seconds! This remarkable advancement has only been possible due to large investments in new equipment (linear accelerators and treatment planning systems) and staff.
